The Quinte Sports and Wellness Centre is progressive, environmentally friendly and sustainable. The following are some of the key environmental features of the Quinte Sports and Wellness Centre.

Use of natural light

  • Maximize the amount of natural light entering the building;
  • Open concept, large windows, glass viewing areas, windowed walls in main lobby and pool allow natural light; and
  • Lighting connected to light sensors to adjust artificial lighting.

Water conservation

  • Urinals, toilets and sinks have motion sensors; and
  • Two water retention ponds hold all runoff ground water to restore the water table.

Solar farm

  • 2,132 solar panels;
  • Panels produce green renewable energy;
  • Changes into energy to reduce carbon based fuels; and
  • Energy produced is between $350,000 and $400,000 annually.

Lighting and heat controls

  • Software controls heating and lighting needs;
  • Lighting and heat automatically set in rooms and areas;
  • Upgraded to LED lighting;
  • Programmed to turn off at night or when rooms are not in use; and
  • Motion sensors in all change rooms reduce the use of light when not in use.

Recovering waste heat (refrigeration)

  • Every dollar in used energy, $0.98 is reused;
  • 98% is captured and reused to heat the walking and running track, spectator stands, dressing room floors, snow melt pits, outside walkways, water for showers and sinks; and
  • Air space heating helps to eliminate the use of additional heating.

Recovering waste heat (pool)

  • Every dollar in used energy $0.98 is reused;
  • Waste heat is captured through the air exchange system and reclaimed for heating purposes; and
  • 95% of captured heating is reused to heat the three pools.

Use of off peak energy

  • Thermal storage units reduce costs of cooling the centre;
  • Thermal storage units store renewable energy in the form of ice, during off peak hours for use during peak hours for significant cost savings;
  • Thermal storage units provide air conditioning to various areas; and
  • Refrigeration plants pre-chill the ice surfaces during off peak hours, reducing energy usage during the day when demand for energy is at its highest.

Supporting green and active transportation

  • Support and encourage the use of green and active transportation;
  • Located on the City of Belleville's transit route;
  • Bike parking areas are at the main entrance; and
  • Located across the street from Riverside Park trail.

These features help to make the Quinte Sports and Wellness Centre one of the most energy efficient and environmentally responsible facilities in the entire Belleville and Quinte Region.
